Army/Air Force (1924 - 1962)

Attack: The attack designation replaced the light bombardment category of 1919.  Except for a dive-bomber vogue during early World War II, the typical attack aircraft was similar to a medium bomber by the end of the war and the U.S. Air Force dropped the "A" designation shortly after its formation in 1947.
