The first aircraft of the Aeronca 7 series was the 7AC Champion which first flew in 1944.  Designated the L-16 by the U.S. Army Air Forces, the "Air Knocker" was second only the the Piper J-3 in popularity as a trainer.

In 1954, production of the Aeronca 7 Champion was continued by Champion Aircraft and named the Champion Citabria.  Champion was acquired by Bellanca Aircraft in 1970 which continued production of the Citabria until the early 1980s.

In 1990, production of the Citabria was begun again, this time by American Champion.  Limited production continues.
