Navy/Marine Corps (1923 - 1962)

Attack: During World War II, the Navy used Fighter and Scout Bomber aircraft for close air support.  Shortly after the war, design criterion for attack aircraft diverged from that for fighters and a separate designation was created.  The U.S. Navy used the Attack designation for both close air support aircraft and "strategic" attack aircraft (light nuclear bombers).
