Wright 1909 Military Flyer

President Theodore Roosevelt's 1907 directive to the U.S. Army to investigate the Wright brother's aircraft led to the U.S. Army Signal Corps' purchase of the Wright 1909 Flyer.  Designated as Signal Corps Airplane No. 1, this was the world's first military heavy-than-air aircraft.

Wilber Wright taught Lts. Lahm and Humphreys to fly at College Park, Maryland in 1909.  The aircraft was then shipped to Fort Sam Houston in Texas with Lt. Foulois who proceeded to teach himself to fly in 1910.  The 1909 Flyer was retired from service in 1911.
