Early Wright Engines

The Engine Specifications

When the Wright brothers were ready to add a powerplant to their successful gliders for the 1903 season, they found no existing engine met their criteria and were forced to design and build their own.  The 1903 engine produced 13 hp (9.7 kW).  The Wrights continued to improve this basic engine so that it produced 30 hp (22 kW) by 1909.

The Wright brothers also designed in-line six and V-8 engines.  Their last engine was made in 1915.
