The Fiat G.91 was the winner of a NATO requirement for a light fighter/tactical support aircraft formulated in 1953.  Although it did not become standard NATO equipment, the G.91 was built in quantity and served in the Italian, German and Portuguese air forces.

First flown on 9 August 1956, Italy phased out its last G.91 in 1995.
