 |  | The  Lightning  was designed in 1937 and competed with the
       Bell P-39
      Airacobra for a USAAC contract that specified an Allison V-1710
      engine.  The Airacobra design emphasized light weight to get the
      best performance; the  Lockheed design team used the unorthodox
      approach of a twin engine fighter. Almost 10,000 Lightnings were produced and saw action in every major
      combat theater. |  |
