The Mi-24 was developed during the mid-60's to provide a multi-role military helicopter.  The prototype first flew in 1969.

The Hind entered service in 1973 in East Germany and was used in exercises in armed assault, anti-armor and helicopter escort roles.  The Mi-24 is quite capable in the gunship role and can also accommodate a crew of four and eight armed troops.  This helicopter saw extensive use in Afghanistan as well as the Iran/Iraq war of the early 80's.

"Hind" is the NATO code name for the Mi-24.
