Even though designed as a commercial transport, Vertol paid attention to assuring that the Model 107 would be suitable for military use.  The prototype first flew on 22 April 1958.

The Model 107 won a USMC competition in 1961 and since then has been used extensively by both the USMC and US Navy for both transport and rescue duties.

The Model 107 has also be sold to the RCAF, Canadian Army and Swedish Air Force.  Kawasaki of Japan acquired world-wide sales rights in 1965.
