The Boeing 717 is the latest development of the Douglas DC-9/McDonnell Douglas MD-80/MD-90 series of aircraft.

McDonnell Douglas planned the MD-95 as a follow on to it's MD-90; however, Boeing purchased McDonnell Douglas in 1997 and redesignated the planned aircraft as the 717.  The first 717 flew in 1998.

The 156th and last 717 was rolled out of the former Douglas production site at Long Beach, California on 20 Apr 06.  This aircraft also marked the end of commercial aircraft manufacturing on the site.
