Boeing 747

Boeing designed the 747 in 1965 as the world economy was surging and air travel growing at 15 percent a year.  The 747's large size was determined by the belief that passenger service would soon be dominated by the supersonic transport (SST) and the 747 would be relegated to cargo carrying duties.

The 747 first flew in 1969 and entered service with Pan Am in 1970.  This big jet was the first wide-body "jumbo" jet and helped establish Boeing as the dominant jetliner manufacturer of the late 20th century.
